The nice thing about the real estate industry is that trends are always changing.  One room in particular that has become increasingly popular over the past few years is the mudroom.  A mudroom is essentially a room in your home that acts as a portal between the outdoors and indoors.  Traditionally seen in farmhouses or the country, mudrooms are becoming a quick must-have in new construction homes in the Twin Cities.  Here are some photos of mudrooms we’ve built and the features that help our homeowners best utilize them to fit their individual needs.

  • LOCKERS / CUBBIES – We are seeing lockers and cubbies in almost every home we build.  It is great for children to have their own space to put their coats and school stuff away, and perfect for keeping everything organized in the entry area of the home.
  • COMMUNICATION CENTER – The larger the family, the more schedules to keep track of and having a mutual place for communicating makes it all more simple.  Whether it is a built-in desk or board on the wall, it will help add organization to your hectic lives and create better communication between family members.
  • PET WASHING AREA – All pet owners know that their pets are constantly tracking in dirt from outside.  A simple solution to this is having a pet washing area in your mudroom!  Our pet lovers absolutely love this feature!  The space allows you to clean your pets and keep the rest of your home clean and without paw prints!

If you aren’t building a new home but want to create a mudroom in your current house, there are plenty of ways to do it!  You can add a bench inside a coat closet, add hooks to a side wall, or add floating shelves for storage.  If you’ve tried something else that works well in the mudroom, let us know!  Trends are always changing and we’d love to hear what you think.  Email us at info@homesbytradition.com or call 952-322-8700.
